Taylor Swift & Deadpool v. Beyoncé. [Hollywood, Music, IP]
US readers are probably sick of this, but for everyone else:
Taylor Swift has been showing up at NFL player Travis Kelce’s games. Now there are young girls watching US football. PR stunt?
Swift attended one game with Deadpool 3 stars Ryan Reynold and Huge Jacked Man. The cast of The Voice also taught Swifties about US football.
OOH! Perfect timing! It just so happens that a Taylor Swift concert movie is coming out! What a coincidence!
$ - Swift’s Eras Tour concert movie is breaking records. Meanwhile, Beyoncé has a concert movie coming out too. But projections not as high?
Strategy - Blue ocean, blue rivers. One “potential” PR campaign that hits multiple demos and cross-promotes. X-Men fans become NFL fans, NFL fans become X-Men fans, Swifties become NFL fans, NFL fans become… uh… Swifties..?
The Business Samurai cast reacts:
“PR STUNT - EFFECTIVE OR NOT?”

Elon Musk, Paris Hilton, & Diablo v. TikTok. (STRATEGY) [Tech, Gaming]
Last week, news flow on Elon Musk and Twitter X:
Musk debuted X’s new live streaming capabilities by streaming Diablo 4.
He also announced a livestream shopping event with purveyor of the metaverse Paris Hilton. These initiatives are reportedly part of Musk’s plan for X to be an “everything app”.
Meanwhile, WSJ published an interesting article on TikTok parent ByteDance. Co. turned an operating profit, but more interesting, rev. growth slowed YOY, and cuts in expenses incl. R&D. No transparency on TikTok’s financial performance, but it launched an e-commerce initiative, which also includes live streaming.
More growth = confrontation? Both X and TikTok are entering e-commerce live streaming, potentially in search of new rev. streams. It’s possible that these might be signs of a maturing consumer social media sector, when platforms start competing more closely with each other.
Megan Fox was part of Diablo 4’s marketing campaign, BTW. Musk is just as much a celebrity, so maybe he should officially be part of Diablo’s marketing, too (create a demon hunter, or demon lord, named “X”?).
[B2C digital platforms are difficult. Everything is competing with everything else.]
Facebook becomes Netflix, Netflix becomes Disney? (STRATEGY) [B2C, Tech, Streaming, Japan]
Facebook becomes Netflix? Would you pay ~USD 17/mo. for ad-free Instagram/Facebook on desktop? No? How do you know? Bc that’s what Meta is considering in Europe, given Eur. regulation. Hmm… an ad tier and an ad-free tier. That sounds… that sounds a lot like Netflix! And other streamers. BTW, Netflix reportedly intends to raise prices after the actors strike ends…
Netflix becomes Disney? Meanwhile, Netflix gets deeper into merchandising its IP (Stranger Things, etc.) and other IP it’s involved with (One Piece). Also getting into the experience economy (ex. pop-up restaurants). Per WSJ: “Executives have learned that it is easier to keep subscribers when they are obsessed with characters and compelling franchises.” That sounds… that sounds a lot like Disney! Also, One Piece’s Luffy will be a ballon in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.

Extra:
Binance meltdown? [Crypto]
Regulatory risk, exec. departures, layoffs.
Gen V (The Boys) - clearer marketing needed? [IP]
Per Grace Randolph, The Boys spinoff Gen V may be underperforming - like she suggested, maybe a clearer message associating it with The Boys was needed?
Frasier and the Toxic Avenger return. [IP]
High-brow IP Frasier returns (but without Niles…) but also equally high-brow IP The Toxic Avenger. Tossed salad and scrambled eggs!
Adult-oriented Barney the Dinosaur reboot won’t be batsh*t crazy. :( [IP]
Victoria’s Secret’s direction? [Fashion/Luxury]
Amazon Prime Video documentary Victoria’s Secret: The Tour apparently didn’t appeal to Gen Z. Co. needs a clear vision? Maybe co. should study Abercrombie?

I see you smirking but come on, success in Hollywood is like 0.00001%. If you’re gonna go for something where the odds are infinitely stacked against you, you have to be resourceful.
